There are many reasons why you may be seeking out a therapist to help with the issues you face in your life. You may be experiencing distressing feelings; you may be approaching important crossroads in life and you’re faced with uncertainty; you may feel like your confidence or self-esteem is low. It may also be something more difficult to put your finger on – you may have an unnameable sense that something just isn’t right with your internal world and you want to make a change.
You may be wondering what it is that I can do to help, and how a relational approach to therapy can support you in overcoming some of the issues you may be facing in life. So let me start there.
I can provide you with a safe alliance, where you can talk in a relaxed and informal way, exploring what it is that brought you to therapy. While there may be no easy answers to some of the complex problems in your life, I will listen and help you to frame the difficult questions. While you explore your emotions at a pace that is right for you, I will listen without making any judgements, seeking more to help you discover meanings.
If you’ve never experienced therapy before, it can be difficult to believe that ‘just talking’ to someone can be helpful. I believe that the strength of the relationship between the two people involved in therapy is the reason why ‘just talking’ can make such a profound change to your life.
When you know that the emotions you’re feeling are heard and acknowledged by another person – indeed when you know that your experiences matter to someone else who cares about the way you perceive those experiences – and you can sense the impact you have on another person – that’s where I believe the healing can start to take place.
